After earning his Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria in 1989, Mr. Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau, SAN, FCIArb. (UK) was admitted to the bar on December 12, 1990.
Following his 1991 completion of the National Youth Service Corps, Y. C. Maikyau joined the firm of Messrs.
He spent 13 years at Danladi Bamaiyi & Company in Sokoto, where he progressed through the organization’s levels to become the Head of Chambers. He established Y. C. Maikyau & Co., a law firm with offices in Abuja and Sokoto, in 2003.
He received the coveted title of Senior Advocate of Nigeria on August 26, 2011, after being appointed Notary Public by the Chief Justice of Nigeria in 2002.
The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, London, United Kingdom, awarded him a Diploma in International Commercial Arbitration in June 2014. In September 2014, he was accepted as a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb).
He was admitted as a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators (ICMC) Nigeria on November 30, 2021.
He has represented clients in a number of noteworthy cases that have altered the Nigerian legal system.

Mr. Maikyau persuaded the Supreme Court of Nigeria to reach a novel conclusion in this case, permitting the replacement of a deceased defendant in a criminal case with the administrators of his estate in order to protect the civil rights of the estate.
As a member of the Oputa Panel, the Human Rights Violation Investigation Commission of Nigeria established by President Olusegun Obasanjo after the country’s restoration to democracy in 1999, Maikyau also made national headlines.
In addition to litigation, he has provided project finance and facility disbursement advice, as well as served as an arbitrator, co-arbitrator, presiding arbitrator, and counsel on arbitral tribunals.
He was chosen to represent Nigeria’s Federal Government on the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) Panel of Conciliators from July 2016 to July 2022.
He served as the Chairman of the 2020 Conference Planning Committee of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and is a member of the Governing Council of the Kebbi State University of Science and Technology in Aliero, Kebbi State. He is also a member of the Court of Appeal Rules Committee (CIArb).
Mr. Maikyau belongs to both the International Bar Association and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) (IBA).
He has served the Nigerian Bar Association in many capacities. He was a member of the NBA Legal Profession Regulation Review Committee (LPRRC), which produced the Legal Profession Regulation Bill after making extensive recommendations for the reform of the profession.
He founded and still chairs the NBA Welfare Committee, as well as the Section on Legal Practice’s Committee on Law and Individual Rights.
In order to lessen the difficulty experienced by NBA members, particularly young members, as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak, Mr. Paul Usoro, SAN, acted as a member of the Welfare Committee.
Mr. Maikyau holds a diploma in ministerial training with a focus on societal leadership from Rhema Bible Training Centre in Nigeria, which is outside the legal profession.
He is passionate about community development and welfare, and he has helped thousands of people in his native Kebbi State through a number of free medical outreach programs.
