Ismaila Yusuf Atumeyi was taken into custody by the EFCC on Tuesday along with around N326 million and $610,500 in cash.
The New Nigeria Peoples Party, or NNPP, has Atumeyi as its candidate for the Kogi State House of Assembly.
Atumeyi, who is running to represent Ankpa 11 Constituency in the Kogi State House of Assembly, was detained on Sunday, according to a statement released on Tuesday by the commission’s Head of Media and Publicity, Wilson Uwujaren.
The NNPP candidate and Joshua Dominic, a man accused of being a serial fraudster, were allegedly detained together in a sting operation at Macedonia Street, Queens Estate, Karsana, and Gwarinpa areas of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
The statement went on to say that the suspects were detained after months of inquiry into the hacking of a commercial bank by a group of thieves who made off with N1.4 billion.
