Kunle Afolayan, born on September 30, 1975, is a Nigerian actor, film producer, and director. 

He was born in Ebute Meta, Lagos State, in the Southwest region of Nigeria. Afolayan made an appearance at the Subversive Film Festival in 2011.

Early Life and Education

Kunle Afolayan was born on 30 September 1975. Afolayan is of Igbomina-Yoruba descent, from Kwara State.

Kunle Afolayan is the son of theatre and film director, Ade Love. He studied finance, started out by working at a bank, and then decided to switch into full-time filmmaking before enrolling in a course at the New York Film Academy. He also did some acting on the side.

Kunle Afolayan Career

Kunle Afolayan majored in economics and started out working in a bank while doing some casual acting, before deciding to move into full-time filmmaking and taking a course at the New York Film Academy.

Since 2005 Kunle Afolayan has been active in the Nigerian film industry. He has made several films including: The Figurine: Araromire which was in the Yoruba and English languages and Phone Swap which featured Wale Ojo, Joke Silva, Nse Ikpe Etim and Chika Okpala.

The Figurine won five major awards in the African Film Academy and was successful in Nigerian movie theaters.

Afolayan Controversy

Afolayan implied in a tweet on April 6, 2015, that Igbos made up the bulk of those responsible for copyright violations in Nigeria.

After receiving criticism from his followers, Afolayan apologized and said he was worried about film piracy, particularly concerns over the prospective release of unlicensed versions of October 1, his most recent movie at the time.

On April 13, 2015, shortly after his outburst, October 1 was released in pirated form.

Afolayan claimed in an interview with Cable magazine that he rarely watches Nigerian films because he prefers to see films that will challenge him and push him to shift his perspective on certain issues. and as a result, he received a number of vehement criticisms from both fans and some of his colleagues in the Nigerian film business.

Days after this news surfaced, Afolayan sent a video to social media in which he apologized for being misquoted and attempted to correct the record.
