Bishop George Jonathan Dodo Biography
Bishop George Jonathan Dodo was born into the family of Mr. David B. Dodo and Mrs. Paulina A. Dodo of Zuturung Mago Village in Zangon Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna State on 17 April, 1956 thereby becoming the second child and first son of the family.
Early Life and Education
David B. Dodo and Paulina A. Dodo were the parents of Bishop George Jonathan Dodo.
On April 17, 1956, Dodo of Zuturung Mago Village in Zangon Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna State was born, becoming the family’s second child and first son.
He began his primary education in January 1964 at St. Patrick’s Primary School (now LEA Primary School), Zuturung Mago, and completed it in 1970.
He had to retake classes 6 and 7 in 1971 and 1972, nevertheless, because he was unable to enroll in secondary school at the end of 1970.
He received his First School Leaving Certificate in 1972. He worked as the school’s timekeeper for two years straight while in the Primary School.
George, a young boy, entered St. Joseph’s Minor Seminary in Zaria on January 26th, 1973, and graduated on May 14th, 1977 with a grade point average of G. C. E.
He served as the kitchen prefect for two Academic Sessions from 1975 to 1977 while he was a minor seminary student.
He submitted an application for admission to St. Augustine’s Major Seminary Jos, which is affiliated with the Archdiocese of Kaduna, after the conclusion of his secondary education.
He joined Augustine’s Major Seminary Jos on August 27, 1977, after being accepted. He studied religion and philosophy there.
Following graduation, George received a Diploma in Religious Studies from the University of Ibadan on July 11, 1981, and a Bachelor of Theology (B.Th.) from the Pontifical Urbanian University in Rome on September 20, 1983.
He departed Nigeria on June 22, 1987, to continue his studies at Fordham University’s Rosehill Campus in the Bronx, New York, USA, where he would study pastoral care/counselling and parish administration and leadership.
The trustee of Fordham University awarded him a master’s degree in arts after his successful completion.
After a brief six-month hiatus in the Archdiocese of Kaduna, where he served as the parish priest of St. Thomas in Kano, Later, from July 1989 to December 1990, he returned to the same Fordham University to complete an Advanced Professional Diploma (APD).
Bishop George Dodo Career
The young George worked at the library at St. Augustine’s Major Seminary from 1979 to 1981 and oversaw the group of students who worked there from 1981 to 1983.
George was ordained as a deacon in the Archdiocese of Jos, Plateau State, in the month of October 1983.
On June 18, 1983, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cathedral in Kaduna, the then Metropolitan Archbishop, Most Rev. Dr. Peter Yariyok Jatau, raised George to the order of the presbyterate (now Emeritus).
His first pastoral position was as the Assistant Cathedral Administrator at the St. Joseph Cathedral in Kaduna (July 1983-June 1984).
From June 1984 to July 1985, he served as the parish priest of St. Dennis’ Parish in Danladi. He served as the parish priest of St. Patrick’s Parish in Dogon Kurmi from July 1985 to June 1987.
He returned after finishing his studies and worked at the following parishes from February 1991 to August 1991: Parish Priest, St. Francis, Zonkwa (currently in the Kafanchan Diocese).
St. Matthew’s Parish Priest, Kaduna Television, October 1991–December 1994.
December 1994 to March 2001: Parish Priest of Our Lady of Apostles on Independence Way, Kaduna. 3.03.2001: Episcopal Ordination.
