Attahiru Jega Biography
Attahiru Muhammadu Jega was born on January 11, 1957, he is a Nigerian academic and former Vice-Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano.
As a substitute for Professor Maurice Iwu, who resigned from his position on April 28, 2010, he was proposed by then-President Goodluck Jonathan on June 8, 2010, for the position of Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), subject to Senate confirmation. Jega was the sole INEC chairman to preside over two general elections in Nigeria (2011 and 2015).
Jega left his job on June 30, 2015, handing it over to Amina Zakari under an instruction from President Muhammadu Buhari.
Early Life and Education
Jega was born on January 11, 1957 in Jega, Kebbi State. Between 1963 and 1969, he attended Sabon Gari Town Primary School in Jega. After that, he attended Government Secondary School in Birnin Kebbi before being accepted into The Ahmadu Bello University Zaria’s Bayero University College in Kano in 1974. He received his BSc in Political Science with a Second Class Upper Division in 1979.
Attahiru Jega Career
He served as a teaching assistant at Bayero University before being awarded a fellowship to study in the United States (1981–1984) at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, where he received a PhD in political science. In 1984, he returned to Bayero University as a lecturer in the department of political science.
Other positions held by the individual included director of the Center for Democratic Research and Training at Bayero University, visiting Senior Research Fellow at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs in Lagos from March 1992 to March 1993, visiting Research Fellow at the Department of Political Science at the University of Stockholm in Sweden in 1994, and deputy vice chancellor (academic) at Bayero University from 1995 to 1996. (2000–2004).
In 2005, Jega was named the vice chancellor of Bayero University. The International Elections Advisory Council now counts him as a member.
