General Anil Chauhan PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, SM, VSM, a four-star general in the Indian Army, was born on May 18, 1961. Since September 2022, he has held the position of Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) of the Indian Armed Forces. The PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, SM, and VSM are among his honors.

Chauhan, a graduate of the National Defense Academy in Khadakwasla and the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun, started his military career in 1981 when he was commissioned into the 11th Gorkha Rifles. Over the last four decades, he has had a career.

Chauhan commanded an infantry division of the Northern Command at Baramulla in the later years of his military service, serving in the rank of major general. 

He then held the rank of lieutenant general while leading the III Corps, situated in Nagaland, as its commanding officer from 2017 to 2018.

He was appointed Director General Military Operations (DGMO) in January 2018, and in that capacity, he oversaw the implementation of two key military operations: Operation Sunrise, a joint India-Myanmar counter-insurgency strike, and the 2019 retaliatory airstrikes against Pakistan. These two actions were taken in response to Pakistan’s aggressive behavior.

Chauhan was named the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) of the Eastern Command in September 2019, following the promotion of his predecessor, Manoj Mukund Naravane, to the rank of then-Vice Chief of Army Staff. Until his retirement in May 2021, he will go on in this role.

After leaving the military’s active duty, Chauhan worked as a military advisor for Ajit Doval’s National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS).

On September 28, 2022, Chauhan was appointed the second Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) by the Narendra Modi-led administration.

In the history of the Indian military, he was the first three-star retiree to be assigned to a four-star rank. 

He took office after his predecessor, Bipin Rawat, who had fallen away nine months earlier in a helicopter accident in December 2021.

Early Life and Education

Chauhan studied at the Kendriya Vidyalaya Fort William in Kolkata. He then obtained his certificates from the National Defense Academy in Khadakwasla as well as the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun. He is from an indigenous Rajput family from the Garhwal region.

Chauhan was commissioned into the 11 Gorkha Rifles in 1981.

He has held a variety of commands, staff positions, and teaching positions during the course of his career, and he has experience leading counter-insurgency operations in Northeast India as well as Jammu and Kashmir. Additionally, he worked with the UN in Angola in that capacity.

He would succeed Manoj Mukund Naravane as the General Officer Commanding of the Eastern Command on August 31 after the latter was promoted to Vice Chief of the Army Staff (VCOAS), as it was reported in July 2019. Chauhan will reach retirement age on May 31, 2021.

On September 28, 2022, he was given the responsibility of becoming the second Chief of Defense Staff.
